Why should I choose this course?
- I want to develop and improve my language skills in French
- I want to have an edge over non-linguists in today’s jobs market
What does the course consist of?
- You will be taught in a structured way - listening and speaking in our state-of-the-art digitised language laboratory; talking in small groups with our language assistant; watching clips from foreign television on screen via our satellite system
- Three units are studied in Year 1 for the AS level
• Unit 1 (Listening and Reading) – Family, Rights and Responsibilities of young people, Leisure, Health, Education, World of Work
• Unit 2 (Writing) – Media (internet, TV etc) and the French speaking world, Protecting the Environment
• Unit 3 (Speaking) – Topics in Units 1 and 2
- A further three units are studied in Year 2 for the full A-level
• Unit 4 (Listening and Reading) – Topics such as Racism, Crime, Health and Drugs
• Unit 5 (Coursework) – First piece based on films and texts, and the second on a topic of interest
• Unit 6 (Speaking) – Topics in units 4 and 5
- The opportunity to take part in an exchange visit to the University town of Aix-en-Provence in the South of France to help improve your language skills and to learn more about the way of life in France

What are the entry requirements?
- At least 5 A* to C passes at GCSE
How is this course assessed?
- AS is assessed with written exams and oral in the summer
- A-level has a 30% coursework component, with one final exam and oral in the summer
What might this course lead on to?
- The study of languages at University, perhaps combined with other subjects such as Law, Business, Management or Marketing, or with a new language such as Japanese or Russian
- In the globalised market place there are more and more opportunities for linguists in business, in accounting and in international law.
