about Stockton

A little bit about our town

Stockton is an old market town of 186,000 people, which alongside Middlesbrough is a major conurbation with all the facilities that entails in terms of shopping, entertainment and two Universities.

The area has required some regeneration following the decline of major industries. In Stockton the River Tees is now very attractive since the opening of the Tees Barrage and the development of the Riverside into a campus of Durham University containing the Medical School, Business Studies and teacher training.

Stockton has good access from major road, rail and air routes. It is 30 miles south of Newcastle, 30 miles north of York, 20 miles from Durham and six miles from Durham Tees Valley Airport (MME). Within easy reach is some outstanding countryside including the North Yorkshire Moors, the Cleveland Hills, the Durham and Northumberland Coastline and the Yorkshire Dales. A little further away are the Lake District and the Borders of Scotland.
