English language tuition
Pre-course Intensive English Language Programmes
Students who are concerned about their English language proficiency and their ability to cope when taught in English can benefit from the following approach.
- If possible students contact the British Council at the nearest office (access nearest address from British Council web-site ) and arrange to sit the IELTS assessment. This will tell both the student and the staff at this College a great deal about the student’s proficiency and about the things which need to be done to improve particular aspects of their English language proficiency.
- At the end of the school year or at some appropriate time they should transfer immediately to the UK for several weeks’ intensive English language tuition. This will be provided by ‘English in York’, a specialist language school, at their premises in York. The school teaches a general English programme which successfully prepares students from many countries who wish to boost their English language skill before starting a course of full-time study elsewhere in the UK. The students will need to pay an additional charge for this intensive tuition but it should ensure that they are well prepared for the start of term in September at Stockton Sixth Form College. The intensive training will be based in York since it will be possible for the students to be taught in different classes according to their ability in English. York is situated not far from Stockton. The intensive English course can last for as many weeks as the student wishes. Students who wish to book pre-course intensive English classes at ‘English in York’ can make all the arrangements via Stockton Sixth Form College.
- At the start of term in September the students move to Stockton to start their full-time study course at this College. During this course they will receive all the English language support they need as part of the study programme provided by the College.
