Why should I choose this course?
- I want to try a new subject which is practical and involves fieldwork
- I am interested in the history of the earth from its formation 4.5 billion years ago to the present day, and want to learn about how the earth ‘works’
- I want a versatile science subject which combines well with most other subjects
What does the course consist of?
- The study of minerals, rocks and fossils
- Learning about Plate Tectonics, Global Geology and Earthquakes
- Finding out about Volcanoes and the uses of Geology
- Field visits to places like the Lake District, theYorkshire Dales and Chamonix in the French Alps.
What are the entry requirements?
- At least 5 A* to C passes at GCSE
- Ideally, a good background in Science and/or Geography
How is this course assessed?
- Three units are studied in year one and a further three in year two
- End of unit exams take place in January and June
- Practical skills assessment in years one and two (laboratory and fieldwork based).
What might this course lead on to?
- Entry to a wide range of university degree courses
- Work in the oil industry, mining, environmental management and civil engineering
