What does the course consist of?
The History department offers two main courses at AS and A-level. You can choose to study either:
Option A: Early Modern History
- In the first year we will study Early Modern Germany and Tudor England. We will examine the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I, and also the ideas of Martin Luther in the German Reformation. We will answer questions like:
• How successful was Henry VIII as King of England?
• How effective was Edward VI?
• What were Luther’s main ideas and how did they spread?
- In the second year we will study:
• The Wars of the Roses
• Rebellion and Disorder under the Tudors.
Option B: Conflicts in History
- In the first year we will study the origins of the American Civil War and the Norman Conquest of England, and will answer questions like:
• How did the issue of slavery develop in America?
• What were the differences between the northern and southern states?
• How effectively did Edward the Confessor deal with his problems as King?
• Why did William win the Battle of Hastings
- In the second year we will study:
• Hitler and the Holocaust
• Civil Rights in the USA
You will take part in a variety of activities including group work and discussion, and use a wide range of resources from books and handouts to videos and the Internet.
What are the entry requirements?
- At least 5 A* to C passes at GCSE, including English Language
How is this course assessed?
- AS and A-level History are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations, each involving essay writing and source analysis
What might this course lead on to?
- History is a well-regarded qualification which can lead on to many degrees, and is particularly useful as a preparation for careers which require you to think critically such as Law, Management and Journalism
