Why study A level Business?

Business is front-page news. The way companies operate is under greater scrutiny than ever before, while TV programmes like The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den have raised the profile of Business to a new generation. This course is designed to use real world business case studies to enable students to engage with, explore and understand business behaviour and develop a critical understanding of what business is and does. The course is designed for students who are interested in the world of business and current affairs. Business provides a solid foundation of theory and transferable skills useful across a broad rand of careers.

Course Overview

The course is assessed by three 2 hour written exams at the end of two years.

Paper 1: Multiple-choice questions, short answer and two essays.

Paper 2: Questions based on three separate case studies.

Paper 3: One case study consisting of six questions.

All the papers cover the business areas of: Management and Leadership, Limited companies and shares, Marketing, Human Resources, Operations, Finance and strategic decision making such as Takeovers and Mergers, International Trade and understanding the external Political, Economic, Social, Technological and Competitive environments that impact on Business success.

Careers

Ideal for students interested in business related careers such as Marketing, Logistics, Human Resources, Finance and Accountancy, Retail or general management. It is a useful preparation for the world of work or as a route into a broad range of university courses or apprenticeships.

What subjects go well with A level Business?

For Accountancy and Finance careers, Mathematics and Economics are ideal. For Marketing and Sales, subjects such as Media, Art, Psychology or Sociology would fit well. Human Resources careers and general management would benefit from the study of Law, Psychology or Sociology. Other useful subjects would be IT, Sport and Computing depending on your future career interests.

Entry requirements

As A level Business is an essay-based subject, we require you to have a grade 4 or above in English. Finance is an important element of Business, so we also require a grade 4 or above in Mathematics.
