Why study Government and Politics?

  • I have an interest in current affairs and what is going on in the world
  • I am interested in how decisions that affect me are made by government
  • I want to know how I can participate in political decisions
  • I am interested in studying Politics or Law at university, or want a course that develops lots of skills for work in fields such as journalism and policing.

What does the course consist of? UK Politics:

  • Democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media
  • Political ideas, including: conservatism, liberalism, socialism, anarchism.

UK Government:

  • The constitution, parliament, Prime Minister and executive, relationships between the branches.

Comparative politics – The USA:

  • The US Constitution and federalism, US Congress, US presidency, US Supreme Court and civil rights, democracy and participation, comparative theories.

How is this course assessed?

  • By examination.

What might this course lead on to?

  • Higher education, including the study of Law
  • Careers in Media, Journalism, the Police and the Armed Forces
  • Many other skills are developed such as discussion and debate, building self-confidence and persuasion skills, transferable to many courses.
