IT Information Guide

BTEC Information Technology is a vocational course assessed through a combination of internally and externally assessed coursework plus one exam. It involves developing your IT skills in a wide variety of software packages and investigating computer hardware in our specialist maintenance room. Following the BTEC course will be excellent preparation for working in the IT industry. Good English skills are essential.

Extended Certificate (Equivalent to 1 A Level)

1st Year

Using Social Media in Business (Internally Assessed Coursework)

Learners explore how businesses use social media to promote their products and services. Learners also create some social media content for a business to assess how useful social media sites are to new businesses.

Creating Systems to Manage Information (Externally Assessed Coursework)

Learners study the design, creation, testing and evaluation of a relational database system to manage information. Following the teaching, you have 5 hours to design, create, test and evaluate a database from a given scenario.

 2nd Year

Data Modelling (Internally Assessed Coursework)

This unit explores how complex spreadsheets can support decision making in organisations by showing the consequences of alternative choices before they are created. You will find out how to design, develop and test a spreadsheet before responding to user feedback to make it better.


Information Technology Systems (Exam)

Learners study the role of computer systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations. Topics include digital devices, peripherals, software, emerging technology, networks, protecting data and legal issues.
