A Stockton Sixth Form College student is celebrating after securing an unconditional offer from one of the country’s most prestigious universities.
Dmytro Drobisher, 20, has received an unconditional offer to study Computer Science at Newcastle University in September, after impressing at both the application and interview stages.
Dmytro arrived in the UK from Ukraine in 2012 and spoke basic English. His initial barriers to education were overcome by his sheer determination to succeed. He completed an ESOL course and enrolled at Stockton Sixth Form in August 2013. Since then, he has successfully passed his GCSE exams, progressed to A-level and expects to achieve ‘A’ grades and above in his final exams in English Language, Mathematics, Computer Science and Applied Science this summer.
Dmytro’s commitment to enhancing his studies outside of the classroom is second to none. He completed a voluntary research placement through the Nuffield Foundation last summer, travelling to and from Newcastle daily to work in a programming role at NewRail, a research organisation based at the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering at Newcastle University.
He is a member of the college’s high flyers programme and often contributes to college life in a role as subject ambassador.
Dmytro said: “Coming to this college was the most important decision I’ve ever made – and the best one. It has enabled me to carve out a future career and secure a fantastic university opportunity at the same time.
“I am forever grateful to my teachers here. They are so good at what they do; so approachable and so supportive.”
Val Hart, Progress Leader at the college said: “To receive an unconditional offer from a Russell Group university is extremely rare, but Dmytro is extremely deserving of a place.
“He will be a credit to the university and we wish him every success in his future.”
