Course Introduction

This course is a linear two year course following the new OCR syllabus (H420)

Advanced level Biology is a challenging but fascinating and extremely rewarding course. It is a useful subject to study alongside many others as it develops your application and analytical skills.

Who is this course for?

This is a good course for you if you enjoy carrying out laboratory work and investigations. You will study a wide range of living organisms from their biochemistry to their overall gross structure. You should choose this course if you wish to study a science-based course at University.

This course will develop your analytical and evaluative skills and help develop a wide range of practical skills that scientists require.

Course Content:

There are 6 modules covered over the two year course covering:

  • Foundations in Biology
  • Exchange and transport
  • Biodiversity, evolution and disease
  • Communications, homoeostasis and energy
  • Genetics evolution and ecosystems
  • Development of practical skills in Biology

Assessment

This course is assessed by examination only. There are 3 papers at the end of the 2 years which have a combination of structured questions and some multiple choice.

The practical skills are reported separately on your certificate but questions on the practical skills are included in all 3 examinations

Progression

Studying Biology at A Level is a preferred subject for many degree courses, such as Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Science, Agriculture, Natural Sciences, and is also respected by a vast array of employers globally.
