What is Biology GCSE?

AQA GCSE Biology is the study of life, from the smallest cells to whole ecosystems. You will explore life processes, human biology, genetics, evolution and the environment through experiments, discussion and practical work. It builds a strong foundation for careers in healthcare, research and conservation, and for further study at A level.

Why study Biology GCSE?

Biology helps you understand the living world, from how cells work to how ecosystems depend on one another. You will build practical skills, learn to interpret data and think scientifically, and explore real-world issues such as climate change, sustainability and disease prevention. It is an essential starting point for any career in science or healthcare.

Is Biology GCSE right for you?

This course suits students who are curious about how living things work and enjoy hands-on, practical learning. It is ideal if you are considering a science-related career, want to make a positive difference to health or the environment, and are ready to work hard to grasp and apply scientific ideas.

What will you study?

  • Autumn term
Cell biology: cell structure, function and division; Organisation: digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems; Biological molecules: proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and enzymes; Practical investigations to apply your knowledge
  • Spring term
Infection and response: pathogens, immunity and vaccination; Bioenergetics: photosynthesis and respiration; Homeostasis and response: hormones and the nervous system; Practical work on enzymes, plant growth and reflexes
  • Summer term

What happens outside lessons?

Biology goes beyond textbooks and exams. You may visit botanical gardens, wildlife reserves or science museums, hear from biologists, medical professionals and environmental scientists, take part in science fairs and competitions, and carry out fieldwork. These experiences connect classroom theory with real-world biology.

Where can Biology GCSE take you?

Medicine and healthcare · Nursing · Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals · Genetic research · Environmental science and conservation · Laboratory and research roles · Teaching. A strong foundation for A level Biology and other sciences.

How will you be assessed?
