Why study Information Technology?

BTEC Level 3 Information Technology is a vocational course which involves developing your IT skills in a wide variety of software packages including spreadsheets, databases, graphics and sound and video editing as well as investigating computer hardware in our specialist maintenance room.

If you are interested in finding out about how technology influences the world around you and enjoy learning in a practical way, preferring coursework to written exams, then Information Technology is the course for you.

Course Overview – 1st Year

Using social media in Business (Internally Assessed Coursework)

Learners explore how businesses use social media to promote their products and services. Learners also implement social media activities in a business to meet requirements.

Topics include social media websites, business uses, risks and issues, developing and implementing a plan for a given business.

Creating Systems to Manage Information (Externally Assessed Controlled Assessment)

Learners study the design, creation, testing and evaluation of a relational database system to manage information.

Following the teaching, you have 5 hours to design, create, test and evaluate a database from a given scenario.

Course Overview – 2nd Year

Data Modelling (Internally Assessed Coursework)

This unit explores how complex spreadsheets can support decision making in organisations by showing the consequences of alternative choices before they are actually made. You will find out how to design, develop and test a spreadsheet before responding to user feedback to make it better.

Information Technology Systems (Exam)

Learners study the role of computer systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations.

Topics typically include digital devices, peripherals, software, emerging technology, networks, protecting data, legal issues.

Careers

BTEC Level 3 Information Technology would be good preparation for studying ICT at University.

It would also help towards any career which requires advanced ICT practical skills – Computer Games         Programming, Website Design, ICT Technician, Graphics or Multimedia Design etc.

What subjects go well with Information Technology?

Here at SSFC you have the opportunity to study a combination of three subjects. We recommend taking Information Technology with Business and any other subject.

You will also find Information Technology compliments other subjects particularly well and would make an excellent third choice subject. Whatever job you go in to will likely use technology of some sort.

Entry requirements

If you have studied ICT at GCSE, you should have passed it.

As Information Technology involves a lot of coursework, we require you to have a grade 4 or above in English.
